From a Faith-Based Initiative to a National Implementing Partner
BAKAID Tanzania was established in 2004 by the National Muslim Council of Tanzania (BAKWATA), a faith-based institution that has served Tanzanian communities since 1968. It was created to respond to growing national needs in public health, social protection and socio-economic development, particularly among vulnerable populations.
Over the years, BAKAID has grown from community-based health interventions into a nationally recognised implementing partner for government ministries, development partners and civil society, delivering large donor-funded programmes in HIV, orphans and vulnerable children, gender-based violence prevention, early childhood development and peacebuilding.
Today BAKAID has reached over two million Tanzanians in 16 regions and more than 52 district councils, supported by 46 professional staff and 440 community volunteers.
