Changing harmful norms, promoting positive ones

Social Norm

Men and Boys as Allies for Gender Equality

Ideas about what it means to be a “real man” can pressure men and boys to use control or violence. Men and boys can also be powerful champions of change.

What many people believe

Men are often expected to be the sole decision-makers, never show emotion and prove their strength through control. Boys learn these expectations early from their families, peers and communities.

Why this norm is harmful

Rigid ideas of masculinity can lead to violence against women and children, risky behaviour and poor health among men themselves. They also limit the opportunities of women and girls and the wellbeing of whole families.

The norm we promote

Real strength means respect, care and shared responsibility. Men and boys who reject violence, share decisions and support the women and girls in their lives help build safer and stronger families.

How BAKAID works on this

  • Engaging adolescent boys in mentoring and life skills sessions on respect, healthy relationships and preventing violence.
  • Working with male religious and community leaders as role models and champions of change.
  • Including men in community dialogues on gender, parenting and violence prevention.

What you can do

Speak up when you see disrespect or violence, share responsibilities at home, and be a positive role model for the boys and young men around you.
